Recently, I photographed author Susannah Charleson and her golden retriever rescue dog, Puzzle.  The three of us schlepped (or slopped?) through the mud to create portraits for Susannah’s new book, SCENT OF THE MISSING: LOVE AND PARTNERSHIP WITH A SEARCH-AND-RESCUE DOG

. Scent of the Missing,a memoir about raising a search-and-rescue dog from puppyhood and forging a relationship with her in and out of the search field, will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in April 2009.

Susannah was referred to me by good friend and dog trainer extraordinaire Susan Blatz (All Dogs All Day), aka Dallas’ own The Dog Whisperer.

The advanced copy editions of the book have been printed and distributed. Yep, that’s my photograph of Susannah and Puzzles on the back cover. Scent of the Missing is already creating quite a buzz.   Dr. Patricia McConnell download Celia

, the well-known dog behaviorist and author, said Scent of the Missingis so well written I don’t know whether to be inspired or to turn my computer off and never write again.” And last week’s Publisher’s Weekly Alice Upside Down dvdrip Stalag 17 full movie buy Cowboy Killer included a prominently-featured sidebar, within the lead story on pet-related books, which asks Houghton Mifflin executive editor Susan Canavan to list “Five Signs That a Manuscript is the Next Marley.” While listing her criteria, she explains: “I bought Scent of the Missing

because it featured all of the aforementioned qualities, but also has real hard news angles and topicality. This is an animal story that is larger than itself.”

And I just finished reading my copy and absolutely loved the book. A charming, touching (no, not sappy!) story told by a very talented author. You’re going to love this book. You can pre-order your copy now.  Here are a few of the photographs we made.

    Hey Chris!

What, you’re not showing the SEARCH AND EAT photo? (AKA the 50-mile-an-hour mud pig) — }:>

Thanks for this. Schlep, schlup … yeah, that pretty much describes our August photo shoot in sum. Puz would say it was AWESOME. And LET’S DO IT AGAIN.

I’m so grateful for your patience that day and the care you took with these shots. Muddy dog, exhausted handler, and somehow you got the spirit of us anyway. Now that’s talent.

April 2010 seems far away and tomorrow at the same time.
